The Sims was a game changer in defining what sandbox games should be.
Imagine being a normal person doing normal everyday things, except in a video game where you can do pretty much anything you want. Sounds boring, until Maxis came along.
And while The Sims 4 is still a hot topic now, I know there are plenty of Sims 2 players out there still loving the older title.
And there is a ton of community content to be discovered for this game. Whether you’re looking to improve the base game styles or change the experience completely, you’re sure to find something interesting in this list.
30. Neighbourhood
The Sims 2 was released back in 2004, so you probably want some visual upgrades if you’re playing the game in the 2020 decade (or beyond).
A good place to start would be couriousb’s Neighbourhood pack.
Textures for most terrain tiles, including grass, dirt, concrete, and roads are replaced with this mod.
Terrain looks much better now, with added detail making the environment much more pleasing visually.
This is the best-looking terrain pack you can find for Sims 2, hands down.
29. Criquette’s Linden Trees
A great match for the Neighbourhood is Criquette’s Linden Trees.
The mod replaces the default oak tree textures with linden trees. The small visual upgrade makes forests look much more appealing.
Criquiette’s textures are much less blurry than the vanilla trees making everything look much better.
You’d be surprised at how much this can change the look and feel of the game for the better.
28. Maxis Centerpiece… as Centerpiece!
There have been so many changes to the series as its grown since the release of Sims 2.
Being one of the earlier releases and given the huge number of variables that goes into a life simulation game, it’s understandable that some things were not as fleshed out as we’d like.
One of those things is that adding a centrepiece onto a table, would not allow your sim to using tables. Yes, that may seem like a tiny detail.
But what’s a life simulator if it doesn’t reflect real life as accurately as possible?
Certain items in the game already act as centerpieces, allowing your sims to use the table even when the item is placed.
However there are other small items that prevent you from doing so, and that just doesn’t make sense. Now you can decorate your dining tables with pretty much any small object and still be able to use them.
27. All Walkbys
Why is it that sims who walk by your house are mostly people you don’t even know?
Well the default game mechanic is that only unknown sims walk by, unless fewer than 8 unknowns are available.
Bothered by the lower likelihood that actual friends walk around outside your house? Well-known modder Cyjon created this fix.
With this mod the mechanic changes so that only unknowns walk by if there are fewer than 255, forcing the script to choose from pretty much all sims in your neighborhood – increasing the chances that you’ll see your friends wandering around.
26. Don’t Walk Away from Stove While Cooking
Another annoying gameplay mechanic for many fans was cooking.
Assuming your adult sims know that burning food is bad, why would they even walk away from the stove while cooking?
Perhaps they weren’t reminded enough as children that playing with fire could burn the house down.
This is especially true in Sims 2, as I’m sure no one wants their sim to die from a house fire. Well, not all players.
No need to worry about that now! Because with this mod your sim won’t walk away from the stove while cooking anymore.
25. Fire Mod
As if causing fires wasn’t already problematic enough, an actual occurrence of fire brings about a completely new list of issues.
Wanting to add to the realism of the game, modder simler90 created the Fire Mod.
Learning Fire Safety now plays a huge part in how your sims react to fires.
Compared to the vanilla mechanic where knowledge of Fire Safety doesn’t make an impact, now sims who have studied Fire Safety are more equipped to deal with fires.
More knowledgeable sims no longer panic and instead try to extinguish fires fast. The mod is well thought out too.
For example, your smarter sims won’t work on fire tiles that are already being put out by someone else. Talk about teamwork!
The modder even went further as to add enhanced reactions for children who are knowledgeable in Fire Safety. They are now likely to use the nearest phone to call the fire department, instead of being completely useless. Good times.
24. No Moaning Till Desperate Patch
One of the games features that can very quickly become annoying is how needy your sims are.
And I get it; the whole point of the game is to watch out for what your sims need.
Of course, they need to have certain ways to let you know that they need/want something.
The whining and arm gestures are a bit much though. It makes even adult sims look like children.
Well this mod fixes that. Your sim will no longer whine and throw tantrums until they’re literally dying. Be careful though, as you might end up reacting too late.
23. Cyjon’s Ghost Hack
Ghosts play a large part in the Sims games as they have a number of activities that affect gameplay.
There are multiple fixes to Ghost mechanics in Sims 2, but Cyjon built on the previous versions to create his own.
Among the changes include Amok Servos, where servos who are scared to death will run amok instead of die.
The Pushy Scares tweak makes it so that ghosts can now successfully scare sleeping sims instead of having to wait for them to get out of bed.
There’s an even a tweak for Cleaner Ghosts – where happy ghosts are more likely to clean. How nice of them!
22. CEP
Much of the appeal of the Sims series is due to the freedom it gives builders.
Players can build and decorate their dream houses, down to the little details like vases and picture frames.
If that’s something you’re into then you’re going to want to check out CEP.
CEP gives you much more options in terms of customizing objects, as it enables color settings for Maxis objects in the base game.
It’s even compatible with most expansion packs, including University, Open for Business, and Pets.
21. Sim Blender
There’s also the type of Sims fan who spends tons of time on character creation/development.
If you prefer to focus on the sims themselves instead of building, Sim Blender is the ultimate tool for that.
Sim Blender is basically sims “god mode,” allowing you to customize multiple aspects of your sims’ lives.
You can manually set or remove relationship flags. Or set child, grandchild, parent/grandparent, or sibling designations.
Heck you can even manipulate your sim’s age.
The best tool for complete control over your virtual universe.
20. Extended Family Treated as Family
For most Sims fans, the biggest part of the game has to be the social mechanics.
Forming relationships, making a family, and going through your sim life. Significant experiences makes the Sims series truly exciting. That’s what the next few mods on my list are about.
This one specifically is the Extended Family mod.
As the name suggests, extended family is now treated as family.
This directly impacts romantic relationships as they are no longer possible for second cousins. Great grandparents now have the option to family kiss or encourage their great grandchildren as well.
Why was it even possible for second cousins to form romantic relationships?
I guess that’s a question I won’t even try to answer, but you won’t have that problem with this mod.
19. Just Be Friends
This one is aimed specifically towards teens and up, making their romantic relationships more interesting.
We’ve all probably experienced this at least once. You like someone but they just don’t feel the same way.
Well if this is something you can relate to, you can probably already tell how this mod adds that sense of realism to your Sims experience.
You now have the option to decide if a relationship is not going anywhere serious, and to agree to just be friends.
Once applied, crush/love flags between the sims will no longer be present.
18. Smarter Choice Of Parent For Entering College Cinematic
Starting a family is also a huge part of any Sims game.
With that, relationships between parents and children are just as important once you’ve settled your own romantic relationships.
In line with that, you ever notice how that cinematic of sending a child off to college seems to always be a little… off?
Well this mod fixes that.
It makes that scene much more realistic as well. Absentee parents will no longer be selected to take their kids to college, as it’s now based on the child’s Lifetime Relationship with the parent.
17. Triplets & Quads
Before we get ahead of ourselves, you’re going to have to plan for your children’s future first.
Well, your virtual children.
For all you know, you might actually be sending 3 of 4 children to college.
The Triplets & Quads mod adds the possibility of giving birth to well…triplets and quads.
Not only that, but you have complete control as well.
You can decide for yourself how many children you will give birth to, assign the odds for 1-4 children, or keep it completely random. Fun stuff!
Side Note: for any Sims 4 players reading this, we’ve also catalogued a huge collection of pregnancy & baby mods in another post. Check it out if you’re big on virtual families.
16. Have/Adopt Child Want Fix
The have and adopt a child mechanic also has its flaws as they are completely separated in the game.
If your sim wants to have a child, adopting one won’t satisfy that.
The same applies in reverse as well.
With this quick fix, that will no longer be an issue as having a child satisfied the adoption want, and vice versa.
15. Free Range Cereal Bowl Set
Now that you have little toddlers running around, it can get difficult to keep them all fed.
Especially if you just had quadruplets.
No, I’m not talking about the financial impact (that’s obvious).
The actual task of caring for each and every toddler can get quite tedious. Luckily there’s a fun and creative way to automate the task.
The Free Range Cereal Bowl Set actually lets toddlers feed themselves. Weird, yet classy!
You simply place the bowl on the floor, add some cereal, and voila. Your toddlers can eat on their own. Somehow.
I’m not sure how ethically sound this is may be, but come on it’s a video game. Worse mods have been made.
14. Pets & Children Share Bed
As your children grow up, it isn’t uncommon to want to get them a little furry companion.
It’s especially common in Sims 2 as they even created a whole separate expansion pack called Pets.
One common complaint is that pets are not able to sleep in the bed with children.
Well now they can.
For all the pet-lovers out there, your pets can now choose to sleep on the foot of the bed while being used by a child.
Take note, though, that once the child becomes an adult this will no longer be possible. There won’t be any room!
They can still sleep on an empty side of a double bed though. So if you like to keep your pets close check this one out.
13. Lifespan Mod
Since we’re talking about having children, modder Phaenoh found some issues with how they grow up in Sims 2.
Most of the life stages went by too fast, making it difficult to keep up with a sim’s needs from birth.
The Lifespan Mod addresses those issues with improvements to life stage lengths in the game.
All life stages are prolonged, adding a day or two here and there.
With thorough playtesting, each life stage has been increased to give the game a more realistic feel in terms of growing up.
12. Job Seeking Noticeboard
The base game included 10 options for job tracks. But with all the expansion packs you can find even more exclusive career tracks for the game.
But the mechanic for finding a job was not updated.
You go through the newspaper or the computer looking through job postings, and by the end of it you’re given 3-4 random jobs to choose from.
What if the job options you’re given aren’t in the fields you wanted to work in?
The Job Seeking Noticeboard actually makes a lot of sense: it adds a job board posting in community lots.
Through the job board you’ll now be able to directly select any job you want without having to go through randomly generated offers you’re not even interested in.
11. Become an Author…Without a computer
This next mod is not only for aspiring writers… it’s a cool additional feature for anyone.
It’s now possible to write a novel on paper instead of having to do so on a computer.
All you have to do is purchase the manuscript in the Creative portion of the Hobbies section and you’re good to go!
As stated by the modder himself, this is a great choice for poorer sims who just can shell out cash for a new fancy-schmancy Steve Jobs device.
10. New Lifetime Wants
Among the available Lifetime Wants in the Sims 2, there were actually four college career paths that were added in the University expansion pack but later removed.
This mod brings those four Lifetime Wants back, as your sim may want to reach the top levels of the Artist, Natural Science, Paranormal, or Showbusiness careers.
Many people who played University enjoyed these additional Wants and now you can too.
As some sims may aspire to raise multiple pets or become Mayor, your sim may prefer a career as an Ecological Guru, a Visionary in the world of arts, or even a Cult Leader. Who’s to stop them?
9. Better Roach Stomp
Nobody likes dirty cockroaches. This is as true in the Sims 2 as it is in real life.
For those who haven’t experienced cockroaches in the game, first of all good for you for being clean even in a virtual world.
Secondly, cockroaches in the Sims are nasty little pests that spawn when the environment is dirty.
They cause your sims an unbelievable level of discomfort by cancelling actions and distracting them until the issue is resolved.
The easiest way to get rid of these pests is stomping them out, but the success rate is pretty low. Making a roach infestation even more of an unwanted stress.
This simple fix increases the chance that stomping will actually kill the roaches.
8. No Quitting
With so much going on in your sim’s life, it can get challenging to be able to manage every single aspect of it.
It doesn’t help that most of the time your sims aren’t very good at telling you what they want, either.
Many users have gotten annoyed at how their sims would sometimes suddenly leave jobs to find that they weren’t satisfied with the pay.
How were you supposed to know that anyway?
This simple mod fixes that problem. It makes your sims complain first instead of actually quitting.
Now that may not sound like much of an alternative, but at least the choice will be left to you to decide what happens next.
7. Always Flush Toilet/Wash Hands
For all the neat freaks out there: does it ever bother you how your sims don’t wash their hands after using the toilet?
Not only is it unhygienic, but may actually cause bigger problems down the line.
Your sim may end up clogging the toilet from forgetting to flush after using it. That would require hiring a repairman just to get it fixed, which I’m sure nobody wants.
Well messy or neat, your sims now have been gifted with much better toilet etiquette as they will always flush after use.
Sims with at least 3 points in their Neat rating will even wash their hands on their own.
No more having to micromanage toilet time.
6. Risky Woohoo
Many aspects of the Sims games have been dulled down, making the game accessible to a much younger audience.
That makes sense of course, as the game is rated for ages 12 or older.
However, many of the older Sims fans are looking for a much more realistic experience.
Leave it to the community to make it possible, starting with the Risky Woohoo mod.
As you probably already know what Woohoo stands for in the game, the mod increases the odds of conceiving.
The mod is actually a well thought out redesign & rebalance of Woohoo mechanics, as the odds change in different locations such as beds, hot tubs, cars, and even elevators. Yes, elevators. I didn’t know that was an option either.
The percentages used by the modder are even justified, as hot tub Woohoo would have a lower chance of resulting in pregnancy vs, say, if it were done in public.
5. Break Up Anytime
The next three mods come in a pack from simlogical, all affecting how relationships play out in the game.
All three aim to make relationship mechanics more realistic, starting off with the Break Up Anytime mod.
As the title suggests, this enables the option for married, engaged, or going steady sims to break up regardless of the state of their relationship.
As in real life, sometimes relationships just don’t work out. And there are an unlimited number of reasons for that. This mod leaves it completely up to you to decide.
4. More Realistic Relationship Decay
Next up is More Realistic Relationship Decay.
The modder wasn’t happy with the relationship decay mechanic built into the game, specifically how relationship ratings would drop back to 0 if sims are away for long periods of time.
With this mod, short term relationships will no longer be affected by distance once the relationship level is between +10 and -10.
Furthermore, negative relationships do not improve over time as well.
Bad blood between sims (relationship level of -95) will stay that way, and can now only be improved if someone apologizes – for which you’ll need the next mod on my list!
3. More Useful Apologies
Sometimes negative relationships can’t be avoided.
Maybe you were just messing around and someone got angrier than you expected. Maybe you even did it on purpose just for fun.
Whatever it is, once a sim is infuriated with another, it may be difficult to repair the relationship.
Luckily we have the More Useful Apologies mod which solves exactly that.
Apologizing now removes the furious state of angered sims, and the relationship rating is increased to just above 0.
If you want to give your sims a fresh start after all that fighting, this is the way to go.
2. ACR
If you’re looking for an even more realistic relationship mod, ACR is a great one to have. Really the best relationship mod I’d say.
Considered by most as an essential Sims mod, ACR (short for Autonomous Casual Romance) allows your sim to engage in different romantic interactions of their own free will.
Sims are now able to flirt, kiss, and even Woohoo with other Sims casually, without requiring them to be in love beforehand.
There are also tons of options here as you’re able to set gender preferences for each of your sims, making for a more diverse neighborhood.
The mod can even make it possible for teens to engage in relationship-related activity, adding a completely new sense of realism to the game.
But for that you’ll be needing this next mod to go along with ACR…
1. InTeenimater
InTeenimater, or known to most simply as InTeen, is a beloved mod for The Sims 2.
It adds a ton of new features focused enabling teen relationships in the game.
One of the biggest features is that teens are now able to get pregnant as well. Good or bad, I’m not here to judge just sharing the facts.
Best paired with ACR, teens are not only able to have romantic interactions with other sims, but experience the same repercussions as well.
The mod comes complete with interactions, maternity wear, and textures to now support teens and not just adults.
It also improves independence in teens, as sims over 18 can now even find their own place, follow adult career tracks, and are no longer required to attend school. Imagine playing an adult-style life with a kid in Sims 2!
What a time to be alive.
